Marfa Zlotnikov was born in Riga, Latvia in 1924 into an artistic and cultured family. Her father was a concert violinist, First Violin and Concert Master of the Riga Symphony Orchestra, with deep and passionate Russian roots. Her lovely blond mother was a thoughtful young woman from Sweden, talented in hosting many European and musician visitors. In their lively home, young “Marfusha” was allowed to explore her whimsical imagination, and her talent in drawing and painting, winning a competitive art scholarship at age 12 to a sophisticated adult art school.
The Hare and the Ibex are part of a collection of wonderful creatures that won her the prize, and that started her on her way to a lifetime of creativity, avant-garde tastes, and rich explorations in oil painting, portraiture, fabric arts, lithography, linoleum block printing and design. Despite having to flee war-torn Europe in WWII, and often struggling to make a living, Marfa long maintained her ability to speak six different languages, her artistic ways, and her love of beautiful materials and the visual arts. She was Christina’s mother, and was proud to see her daughter succeed in the design world and delighted to collaborate with her in this iteration of her art.
Multiples of this Hare can be installed in a row across a wall for a delightful set of ornamental textures hopping in a line.
