Christina purposely kept the artist’s linoleum block knife cut texture from her mother’s block print, created during her youth. The Ibex background texture catches the light beautifully and makes you want to run your fingers over this fascinating frosted surface adjacent to the clear polished areas which form the Ibex.
Glass is endlessly fascinating. It is at the same time delicate, and, a permanent monument made of stone-like material. It is opaque and also optically crystal clear. It both blocks light and absorbs it.
This charming little piece, which is in part influenced by classic Greek early Etruscan art, went through Marfa’s hands from a drawing to a painted tile, to linoleum cut prints and block printing on linen, to carved crystal. Three generations of women spanning almost 100 years contributed to these Marfa pieces – Christina’s mother, Christina herself, and her daughter Kiran Jot, who translated it from linoleum to glass stencil, which Christina then carved into crystal.
